Illinois offers two primary types of personal background checks. Here is how they differ:
- UCIA (Uniform Conviction Information Act)
A UCIA check provides a report of all conviction information on file in Illinois. This is the standard “public” check often used for employment purposes. For example, if you are hiring a nanny or a private contractor, you can request a UCIA fingerprint check to verify their history.
- Access and Review
An Access and Review check is the most comprehensive Illinois background check available. Unlike the UCIA, which focuses on convictions, this report allows an individual to review their entire Illinois Criminal History Record. This is the best option if you need to verify the accuracy of your file or are preparing to petition for an expungement or sealing.
