Can I obtain a FBI criminal history response for myself even if I am not being hired or licensed by a governmental agency?

Yes. Federal Departmental Order DO 556-73 allows that any individual may request a Copy of a Record (or proof that a record does not exist). Only you can request a copy of your own Identification Record. Accurate Biometrics was the first channeling agency in the country to be approved for this service on July 21, 2011.

Individuals typically make this request for personal review, to challenge the information on record, to satisfy a requirement for adopting a child in the U.S. or internationally, or to satisfy a requirement to live, work or travel in a foreign country (i.e., police certificate, letter of good conduct, criminal history background, etc.).

To obtain your individual FBI response, you can visit our office at 6080 Center Drive, Suite 600, Los Angeles, CA 90045. For more information, or to apply for your FBI criminal history response by mail, click here.

How can I obtain my own State of California Criminal History Report?

Individuals in California have the right to request a copy of their own criminal history information from the Department of Justice (DOJ) to review for accuracy and completeness. To receive a copy of your own criminal history record, you will need to be fingerprinted. Our fee is $45, which includes the $25 processing fee for the DOJ. For more information, or to get started visit self check.

To view the DOJ information page, visit https://oag.ca.gov/fingerprints/record-review

If I was fingerprinted before, can you transfer my prints to another agency or employer?

No. Each time you are fingerprinted, your results are sent to the requesting agency/ employer. Your records are maintained by that agency and your criminal background will be updated in accordance with the state statutes. Each employer/agency that requires fingerprinting maintains their own employees criminal history records. A new set of fingerprints is required by state law every time a criminal background check is required by an an agency or organization for employment or licensing.

How much do fingerprints cost?

The cost of your fingerprints depends on the ATI number. The ATI number is provided to you by the state agency requesting the background check. Please contact our office at (916) 318-7890 for pricing information. Our rolling fee is $26 in addition to state and federal processing fees.

What forms of payment does Accurate Biometrics accept?
We accept all major credit cards, money orders, cashier’s checks, company/agency checks and pre-approved billing terms. We DO NOT accept cash or personal checks.
How long will it take to receive my results?
  • Fingerprints are processed on average between 24-72 hours. The State agency requesting the background check will receive a response directly from the California Department of Justice (DOJ). If there is an arrest record on the current applicant, the process may take a little longer to come back, but most responses are sent from DOJ to the State agency within 72 hours.
  • Self check results are mailed directly to the applicant.

You can look up your results on the DOJ Applicant Background Check Status page here: https://applicantstatus.doj.ca.gov/. You will be asked to enter your applicant transaction identifier (ATI).

The DOJ FAQ page can be found here: https://oag.ca.gov/fingerprints/faq

Will I receive a copy of the results?
The results are sent directly to the State agency that is requesting the background check. The results are not sent to the individual being fingerprinted. Accurate Biometrics does not receive responses from the fingerprint background checks for any submissions sent to the California Department of Justice. Accurate Biometrics does receive the responses for submissions sent directly to the FBI (Channeling and Departmental Order) and will disseminate the response to the individual or authorized agency.
How do I check the status of my background check?
  • Applicants should visit the DOJ website to verify your status: https://applicantstatus.doj.ca.gov.
  • You will need your date of birth (i.e. 01/01/1975) and the 10-digit Automated Transaction Identifier (ATI) number that appears at the bottom of the DOJ form requesting Live Scan fingerprint background checks. The ATI number always appears in the following sequence: 1 Letter; 3 Numbers; 3 Letters and 3 Numbers.
  • If you submit by mail you will need to contact our customer service line, (866) 361-9944, to obtain the ATI number.
  • When your fingerprint impressions are processed, the DOJ's response will state whether the prints were processed and the date, or whether the prints were rejected and the reason.
  • The level of service is the request for a background check to be completed by both the DOJ and the FBI. However, if the response states that the fingerprint results are still in process, please continue to check back periodically.
  • The DOJ then sends the results to the California Department of Insurance (CDI). You can contact them for further instruction at (800) 967-9331.
How can I get a copy of my background check response?
You can obtain a copy of your criminal history background check by contacting the State agency that originally requested the background check. The FBI requires agencies who obtain FBI criminal history records pursuant to a fingerprint submission to make the criminal history available to the applicant upon request.
How do I find out if the agency for which I was printed actually received the response?
For all of the background check results, you must contact the company or the State agency that requested the background check.
What if the agency for which I was fingerprinted says they never received the response?

You can check your results on the DOJ Applicant Background Check Status page here: https://applicantstatus.doj.ca.gov/. You will be asked to enter your applicant transaction identifier (ATI) – the number on your receipt that references your fingerprint transaction that is provided to you by Accurate Biometrics. Here is the DOJ contact page for questions and more information: https://oag.ca.gov/fingerprints/contactus

Can I get the results of my fingerprint background check over the phone?

No. Fingerprint responses are sent directly to the requesting agency by DOJ.

Why did my fingerprints get rejected?
  • Missing or incorrect data – When this occurs the data is corrected and the record is resubmitted to the California DOJ. This does not require action by the applicant.
  • Poor quality due to age of the applicant, previous work history (bricklayer, gardener, teacher). When a print record is rejected due to poor quality, the applicant must be reprinted in an attempt to obtain fingerprint images of a higher quality.
  • Missing, deformed or bandaged fingers.
  • There are no fees for the resubmission of the fingerprint for the first rejection.
