College and University Students
College and university students entering a specialized field of study that will require a fingerprint-based background check for licensure or employment may want to get a “pre-check” before starting their degree program to make sure they are able to work in their chosen profession. If there is a disqualifying record in one’s criminal history record or “rap sheet”, it may be possible to have it removed or sealed (see information on challenging your rap sheet below). If you wait upon graduation to process your fingerprint-based background check for licensing, your career could be put on hold if you have a disqualifying conviction on your Criminal Record History Information (CHRI). You may be able to expunge or seal your record based on the parameters of each state where an offense has occurred.
A fingerprint-based background check is the most comprehensive criminal records check available that you can obtain for yourself. FBI background checks, known as Identity History Summary checks or Departmental Order 556-73, examine information from all state police departments and other entities reporting records to the FBI. All interested individuals can request a FBI background check – your personal self review background check.

How to Challenge the results of Your FBI Identity History Summary Rap Sheet
The FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division maintains the criminal history records related Identity History Summary (IdHS) information for the nation and does not have the authority to modify any IdHS information unless they receive an updated record from the agency that reported the information.
Most states require that requests to challenge your IdHS record information be made through their
respective State Identification Bureau (SIB). You may contact the respective SIB for assistance, and if
applicable, request that they provide the FBI with updates to your Identity History Summary (IdHS). To
