How do I get an expedited FBI Identity History Summary Check?

For expedited service you can submit fingerprints electronically by using an FBI-approved channeler. Accurate Biometrics, a direct FBI channeler, provides expedited service and a customer service team for questions and support. To get started, visit our IdHS instructions page.

How long does it take for processing and delivery?

Live scan prints are processed within 24 hours. After processing, the online result is available usually within minutes. Applicants can order a response letter on secure watermarked paper. Print responses have an option for standard USPS mail or Priority Mail. USPS standard delivery can be 1-2 weeks. Priority Mail delivery is 2 to 3 days.

How do I submit fingerprints?

We offer walk-in service at Accurate Biometrics locations; an applicant can register online to get live scan fingerprinting at UPS Store locations; or we can process mail in FBI FD-258 ink cards. AB channels those prints directly to the FBI for an IdHS background check. For instructions on all fingerprint submission types visit our IdHS instructions page.

What response is returned from a personal FBI background check?

If there are no hits, the criminal history check comes back stating that “a search of the fingerprints provided by this individual has revealed no prior arrest data at the FBI.” If there are any hits against the CJIS database, the criminal history is reported in a response called a rap sheet.

Can my FBI background check report go directly to my attorney?

The IdHS check request must be made by the individual applicant, however the FBI response can be sent to the applicant’s attorney. If the FBI rap sheet is sent to an attorney, a release statement must be signed by both the applicant and attorney on the attorney’s letterhead. An example of the attorney’s letter of release is available for download here.

If I’m not a U.S. citizen, can I get my FBI background check processed by an FBI channeler?

The FBI only allows Channelers to process Identity History Summary checks for U.S. Citizens and Non-U.S. Citizens who have permanent resident status; Non-U.S. Citizens without permanent residence status must make the IdHS check request directly to the FBI.

Can I challenge the results of an IdHS rap sheet report?

The FBI’s CJIS Division maintains the criminal history records for the country and doesn’t have the authority to modify IdHS information unless they receive an updated record from the agency that “owns” the information (usually a state agency). Most states require that requests to change your IdHS record information be made through their State Identification Bureau (SIB). You may contact SIB(s) for assistance, and if applicable, request that they provide the FBI with updates to your Identity History Summary. Find a listing of the FBI state SIB information.
