Request Your Personal Criminal History Records Check for the State of California

Individuals in California have the right to request a copy of their own criminal history information from the Department of Justice (DOJ) to review for accuracy and completeness.

How can I obtain my own State of California Criminal History Report?

To receive a copy of your own criminal history record, you will need to be fingerprinted. In the Los Angeles area we have a walk-in fingerprinting location, or we can process fingerprint cards by mail.

A fingerprint-based background check returns more accurate and complete results than a non-biometric, name-based check. Fingerprint-based checks eliminate the risk associated with background checks in which an individual may have a common name, use an alias, or give a false date-of-birth – any of which could adversely affect the results of a name-based background check of a public database.

Applicants applying for a California State background check in person, follow these simple steps:

  1. Fill Out the Form. You can download the California Request for Live Scan Service form here.

  2. Visit our office at 12777 W Jefferson Blvd., Building D, Ste. 3111 office in Los Angeles. What to Bring: Bring the completed fingerprinting Authorization form, a valid, government issued, picture ID (such as a driver's license, State ID or passport) and approved form of payment.   3. You will be given a computer-generated receipt upon completion of the fingerprinting process.

  4. The results of the criminal history check will be sent by the California Department of Justice to you or (your attorney?). At no time will Accurate Biometrics receive the criminal history response

Our fee is $45, which includes the $25 processing fee for the DOJ.

Applicants applying for a California State background check by mail can, follow these simple steps:

  1. You can contact your local law enforcement agency for fingerprinting services. If you need a copy of the FBI FD-258 form, you can download it here.

  2. Fill Out the Form. You can download the California Request for Live Scan Service form here.

  3. What to Mail In: Mail the completed fingerprinting Authorization form, your completed fingerprint card, and an approved form of payment. Our fee is $45, which includes the $25 processing fee for the DOJ. Click here to view complete list of payment terms.*

  4. TA receipt will be provided after fingerprinting that includes the name, date and Applicant Transaction Identifier (ATI).

  5. The results of the criminal history check will be sent directly to you by the California Department of Justice by USPS Mail. At no time will Accurate Biometrics receive the criminal history response.
